STONEHENGE

I took this photograph in 1962 for Gerald Hawkins’ book Stonehenge Decoded. The entire site is a monument to human consciousness. As local people came to realize their situation in a universe, they built Stonehenge in stages to keep up with their expanding awareness of the motions of the heavens above in relation to their yearly endeavors below. Synchronizing their activities with the motions of the planets and stars, they participated in the celestial order that governs all life on Earth. Making that order evident was one of the greatest human achievements of all time, eventually discovered by all peoples in all climes on every continent.
