5. I have always been more of a generalist seeking the big picture than a specialist confined to a particular discipline. All I want to know is how life got started in the universe, how it plays out on this Earth, and what the point is. (Preface, viii.)

6. So far, consciousness is not evident in the structures and processes of the brain, any more than a shopping spree at the mall can be deduced from detailed analysis of a modern automobile. (Preface, ix.)

7. The best way to learn about mental life is still introspection by the one person having access to a particular stream of consciousness, and there is no better way to know yourself on the inside of your mind than by a program of concentrated self-study. (Preface, x.)
